Off-Season TrainingFlexible Options
It’s no secret that playing hockey in the off-season is the best way to stay ahead of the competition, but nowadays everyone does it. Everyone plays AAA. Everyone shoots pucks in their garage. So “putting in a little extra effort” isn’t going to get it done. You need an off-season training program like Build Your Game. We have the right mix of on and off-ice training, professional stickhandling and shooting instruction, and science-based strength training to help you make real strides in your game.
Choose Between Two Training Packages (or Do Both!):BYG Hockey Skills Training and BYG Strength Training
Skills Training Package
We split players up by skill level, as opposed to age, into two groups – black and blue (BYG colors). New players will be offered a free evaluation session to be placed.
Scheduling
We offer summer programs in 5 and 10 week blocks, with both weekday and weeknight options to choose from.
Weekdays and Times
To uphold our promise of keeping a small group setting during off-ice sessions, players must choose to come on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and stick with those days throughout the summer.
The weekly schedule repeats itself throughout the 10 scheduled training weeks, except for the week of July 4th which we take off as a courtesy to families who may be traveling. View the schedule link below.
Skills Training Package
- Two 60-minute off-ice skill training sessions per week
- Two 60-minute on-ice skill training sessions per week

Strength Training Package
Players are split up into black and blue groups according to body size and maturity level, not hockey skill level. Because of this your player’s strength training group may be different than their skill training group, but this will not affect their scheduling, as both black and blue groups strength train at the same time.
Black group (generally under 10 years old)
Younger and/or smaller players need strength training that’s more engaging and fun, without the need for notation and progress tracking. For those players we do what we like to call “pot luck cross training. We use tools like medicine balls, tow ropes, sledgehammers, and many more to give their muscles resistance. We rotate around the exercises on the day and keep things moving quickly to get them a solid 30 minute full-body workout. Then we spend the next 30 minutes playing all the fun athletic games BYG is known for like dodgeball, wallball, asteroids, skatterball, frisbee golf, and many more! All in all, it gets them a great workout and leaves them with a smile on their face!
Blue group (generally 11-13 years old)
Our blue group players are taught how to properly lift, just like our high school and college players. Yes, their young bodies can handle it and no, there is no evidence to suggest it will hinder their growth whatsoever. That’s a myth that’s been well debunked in the scientific literature For most players this young it will be their first time ever doing a real lift, which is why we teach them how to notate, push themselves within 1-3 reps of failure, and progressively increase resistance as weeks go by. It functions as a great “Intro to Weight Training” that gives them both the knowledge they need to build good training habits and the physical development they need to make real strength gains. We generally lift for 40-45 minutes, then spend the remaining time left in the hour playing the fun, athletic games BYG is known for to make sure they look forward to their strength training hour and develop a positive association with the hard work it takes to lift well.
